Let me just start by saying that I am writing this post from a position that I never thought I’d be in: approaching the six month mark as a Technical Support Representative at a company that specializes in software. I’m a English major, who has always had dreams of writing fiction, and more recently has aspired to work as a technical writer, so needless to say that Technical Support Representative was nowhere near the top of my list. The original movie’s dark vision is startling, but it does get a few things right. The “replicants” depicted in the film are an example of “strong AI,” or artificial general intelligence (AGI) that allows a machine to perform virtually any human task.
