The best tip I have ever gotten in my life was “Have a purpose every day.”
In my college days when I played football for the University of Kansas, times got hard. All student athletes can relate to this when I say it was a struggle. You need to find time to balance school, tutoring, homework, practice, workouts and your social life.
During my years at KU, our team wasn’t as successful as we would have liked. People thought that after losing some games we all just gave up or didn’t practice anymore, like that’s how it worked or something. That wasn’t the case at all. That is what brought us together even more. We had to wake up every day and find something deep in our hearts to drive us to keep going at it. It is the same with sales. Say you get 50 rejected cold calls or emails and then the following day you are too broken to carry on…the next thing you know, your confidence is out the door. If that is the case, you are in the wrong profession my friend.
Football is the same way; you don’t just get to show up on Saturdays and say, “I’m here coach, where do I stand?” You have to put in the work behind the scenes. That is the part that the fans and all the outsiders don’t see. They don’t see us on the practice field when its 100° outside and the turf makes it feel like its 120° pushing sleds and running up and down the field. They don’t see the part when we wake up at 4:30 in the morning to go work out and condition at 5, then go to classes and tutoring after that. That pain that goes into the development of the team is what makes it all worth it. That brotherhood that you build with guys from all over the U.S. is so strong and it can never be taken away from you.
You have to have a purpose every day. That is key to everything you do in life. No matter what it is, if you don’t have a purpose, your life will just wander on by and you will be miserable at whatever it is you are doing. Set several daily goals and make a checklist, hold yourself accountable. This is how you work your way to the top and get into that 1% club. That title isn’t just handed to you; you have to earn that.
If you have ever seen the movie Boiler Room, then you know this quote, “Act as if.” You have to act as if you are the president of your company. People shouldn’t have to question if you are an intern or the VP of Sales. They should know by the way you present yourself every single day. If your best foot isn’t forward on a daily basis, then you are doing it wrong. You never know who you will run into or what hand you might shake that day. This attitude will rub off on the people around you and that contagious attitude is what will draw success your way. People want to be around positivity and success. You are just as good as the people you are around most. Just as 50 Cent said in one of his interviews:
“You’ll get as far as the people you talk to for no reason. You’ll be as successful as the people you talk to for no reason. If you’re spending your day talking with someone that has nothing going on, what kind of information could they offer you? Could they help you learn something? Could they teach you something in the conversation?”
Every day you wake up, get those negative thoughts out of your head, strive to be in the 1% club, act as if and involve yourself around success. These values that have been instilled into me throughout the years are a huge part of why I am where I am at Conversica. The great thing is, we all have that kind of mindset.
Conversica seeks hungry go-getters that are willing to do whatever it takes to break through the traditional norms and rise to that 1% club. Artificial intelligence is so new to every industry and is not always understood or accepted. But that is what keeps us going – because who wants to be comfortable in their industry/career/path/life? We strive for change and seek adversity, because if we didn’t, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
In the end, get comfortable being uncomfortable in any and every situation. That will allow you to get past the point of being good. Because who wants to be good? We want to be GREAT. Be GREAT today.
